![]() Chelsea played with two defenders, three midfielders, and a whopping five forwards. Unfortunately for modern soccer viewers, the teams of the 1920s played a very different formation from ones that are common today. Of the 11 players on the field, they started with the most defensive player, the goalie, and counted upwards from one to 11, going from right to left when players were on the same line. Instead of giving their players a choice, the team assigned numbers by position. It began in the 1920s in England with the club team Chelsea. Having players wear numbers on the back of their jerseys is actually a relatively modern phenomenon. We’ll run through the history first and then get to the modern meanings. Luckily, only a few positions are commonly referred to by number and they are quite easy to learn. Third, the meaning of the numbers has evolved over time in twisted ways so that they can no longer be said to be intuitive. Second, there was once an assumption that a player would wear the number of the position he played but that’s no longer the case. First, there are 11 players on the field for each team and remembering 11 positions by number is difficult. The use of numbers in soccer is legitimately confusing for a few reasons. It’s typical in basketball to refer to a player’s position by number but at least there, there are only five positions to keep track of and a player’s jersey number virtually never matches his position as it sometimes does in soccer. In American football, the NFL regulates jersey numbers so that each position has a set of numbers only its players are eligible to wear. The use of a number system to refer to positions is not unusual in sports. Numbers are often used in soccer to refer to a player’s position. She chose #23 after David Beckham…and I had to tell her about Michael Jordan was.Why do some numbers in soccer refer to positions? What do they mean? Update: Little soccer girl loved wearing the #10, but when she switched teams it was already taken. Not sure if she’s going to change, but she might even be to convince me that it’s worth a new jacket and backpack. Well, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that my little soccer girl was so excited when her coach listed her as the mythical#10. He was a part of the Brazilian winning team in thew 2002 World Cup. He has now made way for the greats of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo but he was outstanding in his day. Number 9 was worn by the Brazilian footballer, Ronaldo. Though this number is not famous right now, at one point in time it was. He wears the same number when he plays his the national team, England. Beckham, after moving to Real Madrid, wore the number 23 jersey as a tribute to Michael Jordan. Two players come to mind when you hear or see the number 23 Michael Jordan and David Beckham. David Beckham, when started his career also wore the number 7 jersey, but he does not wear the same number now. I disagree though Ronaldo is a great player and has brought a lot to the game of soccer. Although some people think that he is overrated and that fans love him more for his looks and because he has the same name as Brazil’s Ronaldo. Ronaldo is known as one of the best players in the world. Number 7 is worn by Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal. Players who wear number 10 are regarded as great players who have changed the game in some way, and who raised the bar of the game for the future. Players like Messi, Kaka, Rooney and Ronaldinho certainly are the deserving ones as they brought laurels for their respective countries. Jersey number 10 is now regarded as a legacy and is given to only those who deserve this honor. The soccer scoreboards showed that it was worn by the legends of the game, Pele, Maradona, Zidane are only a few to name, and now it is worn by Lionel Messi, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Rooney etc. ![]() The Jersey number 10 is now worn exclusively by the greatest players. Despite the establishment of squad numbers, jerseys 1 to 11 are often given to the first choice line-up according to their positions on the field.īelow is the traditional numbering of players in a modern 4-2-3-1 formation:īut there are really three numbers that have special meaning… The jersey number traditionally denotes the position of a soccer player. ![]() As usual, I had no clue what that meant so I went straight to the source…Google of course. Our club is about to get new uniforms and our coach thought it would be a great time to reassign all the girls according to their positions. They’ve had those numbers now for 3 or 4 years and have them embroidered on backpacks and jackets. The first day of U9 they handed out uniforms smallest to largest and that’s how the girls got their numbers. I never really thought about what jersey numbers my girls wore.
